Emergency First Aid in Sport

This is a one-day course based on the HSE Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course and on completion candidates receive an HSE approved certificate, valid for 3-years. The course has been enhanced to make it sports specific.

The one-day course will cover:

  • all mandatory aspects as specified by the HSE for EFAW for example Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR),
  • essentials of first aid,
  • duties of care,
  • wounds and bleeding,
  • fracture management,
  • burns and
  • medical emergencies.

However, it is enhanced with

  • roles and responsibilities in sport,
  • concussion recognition and management by the first aider,
  • sudden cardiac death in sport,
  • manual in-line stabilisation of a suspected c-spine injury
  • assistance of the ambulance crew in extrication and
  • extended airway management when considering a spinal injury.

This course is aimed at the first aider working in the sporting environment. The course is ideal for coaches, referees, parents and participants as well as the first aider in sport. Due to the extended nature of the course it is also applicable to medical practitioners such as therapists just starting out in the sporting environment with little emergency care experience.

The qualification lasts for 3-years, but annual refreshers are highly recommended.

EFAW is not an assessed course but purely a certificate of attendance. CSC can include CPR assessments for those that require it at the end of the day. Please note that this will extend the length of the day by one hour based on 12 candidates in attendance.

For those that would wish to run purely a non-sports specific first aid course then the HSE EFAW course can also be delivered.

EFAiS or EFAW does not include Automated External Defibrillation (AED) in its training. This additional element can be added into the course content for those that require this additional certification. CPR/AED alone is a 4-hour course. To include AED into the EFAiS program will extend the day by approx. 2-hours and will incur additional charges.

Below is a template course program for EFAiS. This can be altered to suit particular sporting or practitioner/ candidate needs.

To discuss attending and EFAiS course or to arrange to organise a course within your sporting institution/practice please contact CSC direct.
