EMFAiS is a two-day intensive course, at the intermediate level, culminating in a practical assessment at the end of each day. The course is certified for 3-years and successful candidates receive a CSC certificate as well as HSE approved certificates of EFAW and AED (Automated External Defibrillation).

EMFAiS will give successful candidates a Practitioner/  Learner/ Refresher experience that will alow them to act as a practitioner dealing with emergency athlete care in sport and exercise medicine on the field-of-play. It will provide deeper knowledge that can be applied when working alongside other experienced health care practitioners and ambulance crews, as well as refreshing the knowledge of clinical skills already established and currently practiced.

EMFAiS was the course delivered on the Master of Science in Sports and Exercise Medicine at Nottingham University in December 2010. It is also a Global course having recently been delivered within the United Arab Emirates in June 2011.  

The course content includes:

  • Scene safety and essentials of first aid
  • CPR and AED
  • Primary A-E Approach
  • Wound and Bleeding and Burns
  • Fractures and immediate management
  • Cervical spine awareness
  • Medical emergencies
  • Roles and responsibilities
  • Assessment and management of the injured player
    • includes assisting the ambulance crew with extrication
    • collar application
  • Casualty assessment
    • including extended airway management
  • Head injuries and concussion management (based on the Zurich consensus and SCAT 2)
  • Sudden cardiac death in sport
  • Injury prevention
    • Hydration and nutrition (introduction to)
    • Warm up and cool down
  • Video analysis 
  • Practical workstations and outdoor moulages based on sporting scenarios



EMFAiS Course Program 

Below is the template course program. This can be adjusted to suit the needs and requirements of the organisation or sport and made to be generic or sports specific. 

This is a practical based course that includes EFAW and AED certificates. The former valid for 3 years from the date of completion of the course, the latter valid for 12 months.
